If you're anything like me, you've got years of files in Google Drive. Meeting notes, proposals, budgets, project plans, and random documents people have shared with you. When you need to find something specific, you probably type a relevant word in the search bar and dig through the files that come up.
That’s fine if you just need to quickly find a particular file. But there might be times where you’re just looking for a specific piece of information inside a file. Like the cost of a particular project or product, or a particular piece of customer feedback from a survey. To find those things, you might find yourself opening multiple files and having to scan through them.
Now, Gemini can search across your files and give you the answer directly, without you needing to open a single document.
How to search smarter in Google Drive
Click in the Drive search bar and type a question and hit enter. For example:
"What were the key decisions from last week's project meeting?"
"Find the budget breakdown for Q1"
"What feedback did Sarah give on the product launch plan?"

You'll see an AI Overview at the top of the results. It pulls together the relevant information from across your documents to answer your question.
Now you can click the 'Ask Gemini' button to ask follow up questions. For example:
“Summarise the whole project’s current status”
“Is the website copy complete?”
“Do I have any action items?”
Add more sources if you need to
Ask more questions in the prompt box

When is this helpful?
Honestly, any time you find yourself thinking "I know this is in a document somewhere!" A few ideas:
Quickly finding decisions or action items buried in old meeting notes
Pulling numbers from a budget or report without opening the file
Checking what was agreed with a client or supplier
Tracking down feedback someone gave you weeks ago
Getting up to speed on a project by searching for its name and asking for a summary
This feature is still rolling out, so you might not see it in your account just yet.
If you also want a quicker way to check files without opening them, here's a previous tip on previewing files directly from Drive.
