Did you know there’s a web-based video editor included in Google Workspace? It’s called Google Vids and has been quietly getting some new features added.

It’s ideal for turning slides into engaging videos (I wrote about that here), introducing new members of the team, sharing updates, or even creating tutorial videos. Anything you make can be saved directly to Drive, or even sent straight to YouTube.

Now, a Chrome extension makes it even easier to get started.

How to quickly record with Google Vids

  1. Install the Google Vids Screen Recorder Chrome extension from here

  2. Click the extension’s icon in the toolbar anytime you want to record

  3. Choose the options:

    1. Recording mode (e.g. camera or camera and screen)

    2. Noise cancellation

    3. Countdown before recording

    4. Select your camera and microphone

    5. Apply visual effects (e.g. blur your background)

  4. Click next

  1. [Optional] If you’re recording your screen, select the window/tab

  2. Click record

  3. When you’re done, you can:

    1. Play back the recording

    2. Re-record it

  4. Once you’re happy, choose ‘Edit in Vids’

  1. Make any edits, then go to the file menu to:

    1. Download the file

    2. Save it to Drive

    3. Export it directly to YouTube

The Chrome extension makes it easy to record on the fly, but you can always get started from scratch at vids.new if you need to. Honestly, I’m really impressed by what’s possible!
