One of the moments I remember thinking ‘whoa!’ about the capabilities of AI was my first time hearing an audio overview from NotebookLM.
Not everyone has heard of or tried NotebookLM, so it’s great to see Google taking some of its features mainstream. That latest is that same feature I was blown away by - now baked into Google Docs.
How to create audio summaries in Google Docs
If you’ve heard a NotebookLM audio overview before, you’ll know it’s a conversation between two people. The benefit with this new feature in Docs is that it’s a single voice summarising the content.
It’s quick and easy to try:
In a document, click ‘Tools’ in the menu bar
Go to ‘Audio’
Click ‘Listen to document summary’

A player pops up in the bottom left of the screen with some options:
Click ‘1x’ to select a different playback speed
Click the ⋮ button and choose ‘Change voice’ to choose from a selection.

That’s it! If you’re more interested in getting the entire document read aloud, check out this previous tip.
